Short description

OSX/Filecoder.KeRanger.A is a trojan that encrypts files on local drives. To decrypt files, the user is asked to send information/certain amount of money via the Bitcoin payment service.

Installation

When executed, the trojan copies itself into the following location:

  • /Users/%username%/Library/kernel_service

The trojan creates the following files:

  • /Applications/Transmission.app/Contents/Resources/General.rtf
  • /Users/%username%/Library/.kernel_pid
  • /Users/%username%/Library/.kernel_time

The trojan may create the following files:

  • /Users/%username%/Library/.kernel_complete

The trojan encrypts the file content.


The extension of the encrypted files is changed to:

  • .encrypted

The RSA-2048, AES-256 encryption algorithm is used.


To decrypt files, the user is asked to send information/certain amount of money via the Bitcoin payment service.


The trojan creates the following files:

  • %volumes%\­README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt
  • %users%\­README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt
Information stealing

The trojan collects the following information:

  • device model

The trojan attempts to send gathered information to a remote machine.


The trojan contains a list of (6) TOR addresses. The HTTP, TOR protocol is used in the communication.
